No Stream 01/29/23

Due to technical difficulties beyond our control, we are unable to stream liturgy today. We apologize for the inconvenience.

An Important Message from Our Cantor

As many of you know I retired from my full-time job a little over 3 years ago after 44 years of service to the Pittsburgh Press and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. My intention at that time was to travel much more than I was able to while still working. I had also planned to retire from cantoring in order to have the ability to freely travel. With the Covid pandemic having hit 3 months after my first major vacation, my increase in travel was put on hold. In turn, I delayed my cantoring retirement.

Now that restrictions are being lifted, I want to do more traveling. Because it is very difficult to find replacements when I am away (as most cantors have regular commitments), I am hoping to find a few people from both St. John the Baptist and St. John Chrysostom who would be interested in learning to cantor liturgies.

Cantoring has been a very rewarding vocation for the last 47+ years, but it is time to slow down and pass the baton to others.

I will personally teach and guide each person interested in learning how to cantor, a critical vocation in our Byzantine Catholic Church. There are many sources with everything one would need to learn.…

Church Sound System

We would like to thank everyone for their patience as we work bugs out of the church’s sound system. The audio that streams online seems to be fine, but the sound inside the church makes understanding voices clearly very difficult. It’s an old system that is tricky to set up just right. Additionally, because of the large speakers mounted in the ceiling, it’s rather prone to feedback. Please know that we are painfully aware of the difficulties experienced by parishioners with diminished hearing and are working very hard every week to address them. We’re trying our best to make Fr. Miron clearly and easily heard without causing ear-splitting screeches by amplifying him too much. We are also currently working on making necessary upgrades to the system, a process begun under Fr. Tom and put on hold because of his untimely death. If you would like to contribute financially to those upgrades, please contact Fr. Miron.

Welcome, Fr. Miron!

The faithful of St. John Chrysostom are happy to welcome and introduce our new residing clergyman and spiritual father, Reverend Father Miron Kerul-Kmec Jr.!

Father Miron’s journey to this day began in Kosice in Slovakia where he was born, the son of a Greek Catholic priest. Growing up, he was very familiar with life in the Church and living in a rectory. With his parents, Father Miron Sr., and mother Marcella, he came to America when he was 14 years old. The family eventually settled at St. Nicholas Church in Barberton, where Father Miron was appointed pastor. Miron Jr. became acquainted with the ways of American life at St. Mary Byzantine School in Cleveland, Coventry High School, and the University of Akron. Following the call to holiness and the priesthood, which he had discerned at a very young age, he entered SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Pittsburgh. He graduated with a Master of Arts in Theology degree.

He received minor orders, married Sarah Seay, and was ordained by Most Reverend Milan Lach SJ, Bishop of the Eparchy of Parma, to the Diaconate on May 21, 2020. A year later, Deacon Miron requested a canonical transfer to the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh, and Archbishop William accepted him on June 15, 2021.
